Description of Microsoft Authenticator App Download for Android

You can utilize Microsoft Authenticator for convenient and secure access to all your online accounts, by implementing multi-factor authentication, passwordless, or password autofill features. This app also provides account management options for your personal, work, or school Microsoft accounts.

Multi-factor authentication (MFA), or two-factor authentication (2FA), adds an extra layer of security to your account. Once you enter your password to log in, you will be prompted for an additional form of verification to prove that it is really you trying to access the account. You can either approve a push notification sent to the Microsoft Authenticator app, or enter the one-time password (OTP) generated by the app. The OTP codes have a 30-second timer, making it more secure and convenient, as you don't need to remember or use the same time-based one-time password (TOTP) twice. The OTP doesn’t require you to be connected to a network and won’t drain your battery. You can also add multiple accounts to the app, including non-Microsoft accounts such as Facebook, Amazon, Dropbox, Google, LinkedIn, GitHub and many more.

You can now use your phone instead of your password to log in to your Microsoft account. Simply enter your username, then approve the notifications sent to your phone. Your fingerprint, faceID, or PIN is used as a second layer of security in the two-step verification process. Once you've signed in with two-factor authentication (2FA), you'll have access to all your Microsoft products and services, including Outlook, OneDrive, Office, and more.

The Microsoft Authenticator app can also autofill passwords for you. You can sign in on the "Passwords" tab inside the app with your personal Microsoft account to start syncing passwords (including those saved in Microsoft Edge). By making Microsoft Authenticator the default autofill provider, you can begin autofilling passwords on apps and sites you visit on your mobile device. Your passwords are protected with multi-factor authentication in the app, requiring verification with your fingerprint, faceID, or PIN to access and autofill passwords on your mobile device. You can also import passwords from Google Chrome and other password managers.

Your work or school might require you to install the Microsoft Authenticator app to access certain files, emails, or apps. To do this, you'll need to register your device to your organization through the app and add your work or school account. Microsoft Authenticator also supports cert-based authentication by issuing a certificate on your device. This will inform your organization that the sign-in request is coming from a trusted device, streamlining your access to additional Microsoft apps and services without needing to log in each time. Because Microsoft Authenticator supports single sign-on, you won't need to log in again to access other Microsoft apps on your device once you have proven your identity.
