Multi-factor authentication (MFA), or two-factor authentication (2FA), adds an extra layer of security to your account. Once you enter your password to log in, you will be prompted for an additional form of verification to prove that it is really you trying to access the account. You can either approve a push notification sent to the Microsoft Authenticator app, or enter the one-time password (OTP) generated by the app. The OTP codes have a 30-second timer, making it more secure and convenient, as you don't need to remember or use the same time-based one-time password (TOTP) twice. Microsoft Authenticator also supports cert-based authentication by issuing a certificate on your device. This will inform your organization that the sign-in request is coming from a trusted device, streamlining your access to additional Microsoft apps and services without needing to log in each time. Because Microsoft Authenticator supports single sign-on, you won't need to log in again to access other Microsoft apps on your device once you have proven your identity.
